In the Moment - Emerald Halo

Rachel Beardsley December 10, 2024

Emerald Halo: A Rare Phenomenon Over Emerald Lake, BC

Astrophotography in the Canadian Rockies often rewards patience with breathtaking moments, but Emerald Halo is a shot unlike any I’ve captured before. This image features a massive moon halo illuminating the night sky, with a silhouetted forest framing the ethereal glow. In the foreground, a solitary golden Christmas tree stands lit against the dark shoreline of Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park—a scene that feels straight out of a dream.

The Phenomenon of Moon Halos

Moon halos are a fascinating atmospheric phenomenon caused by the refraction and reflection of moonlight through millions of ice crystals in high-altitude cirrus clouds. These halos often appear as a large, circular glow around the moon, with a radius of roughly 22 degrees. Their ethereal beauty is heightened in clear, cold conditions—common in the Canadian Rockies during winter nights.

The halo's colors are subtle yet mesmerizing, with the inner edge tinged faintly in red and the outer edge glowing pale blue. Capturing such a phenomenon in a pristine location like Emerald Lake, with its tranquil waters and dramatic alpine surroundings, adds another layer of magic to this already rare event.

What Makes Emerald Halo Unique

What sets Emerald Halo apart is the juxtaposition of celestial wonder and human touch. The illuminated Christmas tree in the foreground adds a warm, golden glow, contrasting beautifully with the cool tones of the moon halo. Its placement on the shores of Emerald Lake, one of the most picturesque destinations in Yoho National Park, creates a composition that feels both serene and festive.

Emerald Lake is known for its striking turquoise waters in the summer, but this winter shot captures a different side of its beauty. The reflective stillness of the lake and the surrounding snow-covered peaks create a perfect canvas for the celestial display above.

A Photographer’s Dream

Photographing moon halos requires precise conditions: a bright moon, clear skies, and just the right amount of thin cirrus cloud coverage. These moments are fleeting, and capturing one over such an iconic location makes Emerald Halo truly special. For photographers and stargazers alike, this image is a reminder of the magic that can be found in the Canadian Rockies, even on the coldest winter nights.

Plan Your Visit to Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake, located in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, is a must-see for travelers exploring the Canadian Rockies. Whether you visit in summer to witness its vibrant turquoise waters or in winter for its snow-draped tranquility, the lake offers unparalleled opportunities for photography, stargazing, and serene reflection.

If you’re a fan of astrophotography or simply love the beauty of nature, Emerald Halo is a stunning reminder of the magic that can be found in Canada’s wilderness.
